Cairo: Thirty people accused of attempting to assassinate Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi and Prince Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al Saud have been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Egyptian Criminal Court sentenced 29 others to 15 years, 81 to 15 years, 36 to 10 years, one defendant to seven years and 117 to three years.

The court which issued the verdicts today acquitted one defendant and terminated the criminal proceedings against another who passed away.

The defendants were charged with plotting to assassinate Al Sisi twice and setting up two cells – including one which was assigned to target the Egyptian President as he performed Umrah in Mecca.

Investigations revealed that the plotters had brought explosives and stored them on the 34th floor of a hotel, believing that Al Sisi would stay there, according to Almarsd.
