Bahrain win friendly

BAHRAIN last night defeated South Korea 24-23 in a friendly at the Bahrain Handball Association Hall in Umm-Al-Hassam.

The game was a second exhibition duel this week between the two sides who are warming up to compete in the 2020 Asian Men’s Handball Championship starting on Thursday in Kuwait.

Bahrain won the first friendly 30-29.

Bahrain, coached by former Iceland international player Aron Kristjansson, currently have 20 players in their squad but this is expected to be trimmed before they depart for the Asian event.

A total of 13 teams, divided into four groups, are set to compete in the Asian Championship.

Bahrain are in Group ‘A’ along with Iran and New Zealand. Group ‘B’ features China, Japan and Qatar.

Group ‘C’ includes Australia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea while Hong Kong, Iraq, the UAE and hosts Kuwait are in Group ‘D’.

The championship is also the Asian qualifying tournament for the 2021 World Championship under the International Handball Federation with the semi-finalists going through.

The Bahrain squad: Hussein Al Sayyad, Ali Mirza, Mohammed Habib Madan, Jassim Al Salatna, Ali Eid, Mohammed Abdul Hussein, Hassan Shehab, Mahdi Saad, Mohammed Mirza, Bilal Basham, Mohammed Habib, Hassan Al Samaheeji, Mohammed Abdul Redha, Mahmoud Hussein, Ahmed Al Maqabai, Isa Khalaf, Ahmed Jalal, Abdulla Zaimour, Hussein Mahfoudh, and Abdulla Ali.

South Korean: including Lee Changwoo, Pyun Ui Beom, Byun Youngjun, Ryu Jinsan, Kim Gimin, Kim Tae Gyu, Park Young Jun, Kang Tan, Jeong Kwanjung, Ha Min Ho, Ha Tae Hyun, Park Ji Seop, Kim Jinyoung, Choi Beom-Mun, Park Seung and Kim Dongmyung. They are coached by Kang Il Koo.
