Bahrain women claim 12 medals


BAHRAINI women athletes claimed 12 medals yesterday – six gold, three silver and three bronze - on the second day of athletics competition in the Fifth Arab Women Clubs Games in Sharjah.

Al Ahli Athletics Club boosted Bahrain’s medal tally to 36 - 15 gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze.

The Bahraini team of Mona Jihad, Marwa Al Ajooz, Salha Jassim and Hajir Al Omairi bagged the gold in the 4X100 metre relay.

Hajer Al Khalidi celebrated her third individual gold winning the 200m race, one day after winning a gold in the 100m, beating her compatriot Marwa Al Ajooz.

Salha Jassim won the 400m hurdles title after bagging silver in the 400m.

In the 800m, Manal Al Bahrawi clinched gold beating her Kuwaiti rival Amal Yusuf Al Roomi. Al Bahrawi won silver in the 1500m on Saturday.

Bonito Edwa won the 10,000m title after claiming silver in the 5000m.

Mona Jihad grabbed the gold in the high jump competition after winning bronze in the long jump while Noora Jassim won silver in the discus throw competition.

Today, Bonito Edwa will take part in the 5000m, Noora Jassim in the shot-put finals and Marta Hirpato in the 3000m hurdles. The 4X400m will mark the end of the athletic events.

Bahrain Shooting Club was awarded the best club of the tournament trophy as they topped the table with eight medals – three gold, three silver and two bronze. The team yesterday won two silver in the 25-metre rifle competition.

In the team event, Oman Club finished first, Bahrain Club second and hosts UAE Club third.


In the 10-metre rifle competition, Bahrain’s Sara Al Dosary won the individual gold while her compatriots Marwa Al Omairi and Safa All Dosary finished second and third, respectively. The team also won gold at the clubs level.

Bahrain delegation head Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa attended the awarding ceremony.

In the individual fencing competitions which started yesterday, Al Hala Club grabbed three bronze through Laila Fardeen Hassan, Somaya Abdulrahman Al Buainain and Maram Mohammed Shareef.
