BAHRAIN Rugby Football Club (BRFC), who successfully defended their West Asia Premiership title earlier this year, have started training again, hoping competitive action will take place later this year.
Sports-lovers have only just been allowed back in to the home ground in Janabiya following the Covid-19 closure of facilities such as the gym, pitches and pool.
“At the moment we have allowed all our senior sports to return to action of some sort within the guidelines given to us,” said club sports manager Lindsey Gibson.
“Everything, from badminton to rugby, is back in some sort.
“The West Asia Premiership has understandably been delayed this season to enable all the teams in the league to ensure they are ready for it from both the fitness side and health and safety side.
“We are working closely with the teams in the UAE, and the UAERF, directly to ensure we are all working towards the same timelines.
“The first team players have been working hard in the gym and we are now slowly starting to get some on-field conditioning done as well which all the boys are really keen for as it’s been a long time since our last game against Dubai Exiles on February 8.”
BRFC celebrated topping the West Asian Premiership league table for the second year in a row back in March, as reported in the GDN.
The first team’s training session was set aside and the players were invited to toast their success by Adam Wallace, BRFC head coach, and his coaching staff, with a small gathering in the players’ lounge.

As reported earlier, Bahrain’s home rugby games against Jebel Ali Dragons and Abu Dhabi Harlequins were cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis. The rugby authorities marked both games as 0-0 draws, with Bahrain announced as league winners.
Other sporting activities are now also under the spotlight at BRFC.
“Although we have no dates set for the return of the netball league for our ladies’ teams we would hope this is something we can get up-and-running again; as there is no overseas’ travel it makes it a lot more plausible that it could run within its normal dates this season,” added Gibson.
“The one thing that is glaringly missing at the moment is children’s sports; we will be doing everything we can to ensure we get these back up-and-running as soon as it is safe to do so.
“At the moment we are running a booking system where the members email me to get booked into our allocated slots; this is to ensure we don’t have too many people either in the gym or the pool.
“We also had to take into consideration leaving time slots available for cleaning the gym and poolside area so this was all factored in when we confirm the timetable.”
