Defending champions Al Ahli got off to a dominant start yesterday, beating Nuwaidrat 94-51 in the opening round of the Zain Bahrain Basketball League.
Al Ahli got off to a strong start at the Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam claiming the first quarter 18-6 and the second 20-13 to lead 38-19 at half-time. They returned with more vigour after the interval as a hapless Nuwaidrat went down 19-25 in the third quarter. The final session saw Ahli strike with all their might to seal the quarter 31-13.
Ahmed Aldurazi was the top scorer for Ahli with 22 points, five assists and four rebounds. He was supported by Anthony McClain who scored 21 points with 14 rebounds. Anthony Walker scored 25 points for Nuwaidrat with nine rebounds and two assists.
In the second match of the evening, Al Hala edged past Samaheej 78-68.
Hala made a dominant start to claim the first quarter 22-6 but lost momentum in the second as Samaheej edged ahead by four points (18-14). Hala led 36-24 at half-time.
The third quarter proved decisive for Hala who powered ahead 28-10 before Samaheej staged a valiant comeback in the final session which they took 34-14.
Amir Williams paced with winners with 22 points and 20 rebounds and he was backed by Sayed Kadhem Majed with 19 points. Jerrell Martin was Samaheej’s top scorer with 30 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
Manama will take on Sitra at 5.30pm today, followed by the match between Al Najma and Bahrain Club at 7.30pm. Both games will be held at Zain Arena.
